I’m not too sure what meaning her performance of the Scheisse intro or Born This Way may hold, but I think I got The Edge of Glory performance figured out.
If you noticed, the stage had three guillotines lined up that said the following: sex, money, and vanity. Throughout the performance, Gaga manages to doge death by the “sex” guillotine, which I assume stands for death by sex, and the “money” guillotine, which could mean she avoided death by money. However, the guillotine entitled “vanity” appears to catch her, or so we think it catches her. To our surprise, Gaga rises up from the guillotine holding a blue wig and stating, “beauty is a lie”.
The reason she managed to overcome death by vanity is because beauty is indeed a lie. Her beauty isn’t defined by critics, society, or anyone else. Her beauty is defined by her and only her.
