I don’t know if you guys have noticed, but Gaga has been throwing out there some dead on references to the Renaissance period. First, let’s start off with the mythical creatures theme she has going on right now. Unicorns were extremely popular during this period, and they were truly believed to exist. Based on rumors, lady gaga could possibly portraying a mermaid in the edge of glory music video, another mythical creature popularized during the Renaissance period. So, how does this all tie in with the religious themes of born this way? Believe it or not, at one point, the unicorn was a symbol for Jesus Christ, and as for mermaids, some scholars believe Mary Magdelene to be a descendant of mermaids. Fun fact: Ariel from the little mermaid was believed to be based on Mary Magdelene.
Now, let’s get to clothing and props. In the Judas video Gaga is seen wearing a Renaissance styled garment. Some critics found the video to be reminiscent of Romeo + Juliet, the live action movie starting Leo Dicaprio. Ironically, it was also rumored the edge of glory’s music video plot would be something similar to the Romeo + Juliet plot. During Gaga’s performance for Germany’s Next Top Model, she managed to survive three guillotines. Naturally, guillotines played a major role during the Renaissance period, especially during the French Revolution.
As for the religious sounds in born this way, gregorian chants and church bells were at the peak of their popularity during the Renaissance. Unless you are completely deaf, you have by realized that gregorian chants and church bells can be found multiple times throughout the album.
I can’t wait to see what else she has up her sleeve.
